Address : Hoengseong-eup, Hoengseong-gun, Gangwon-do
A traditional market where you can feel the generosity and unique taste of the countryside.
Hoengseong Traditional Market is a market that opens in Hoengseong-eup area and according to historical records, it was the biggest market in the country outside the Dongdaemun Gate of Seoul.
The first March Independence Movement of Gangwon Province was held on March 1, 1919, on the Hoengseong Market day and during the Japanese colonial period, Japanese merchants tried to establish a trading area but the merchants and inhabitants of Hoengseong united and started a boycott against the Japanese and successfully defended their businesses.
Hoengseong Market opens on the 1st and 6th day of each month. Merchants and traders from all around the country come and sell all sorts of products and a part of the market is also designated as the domestic product zone and the farmers of Hoengseong can sell organic and pesticide-free produce they have grown themselves. The Market is not as neat and convenient as those supermarkets in big cities but it's a place where you can experience warmhearted people and the true atmosphere of the countryside. Although the market is an authentic, traditional market, it is equipped with a spacious parking lot and you can look around the market more comfortably. It's just a wonderful place with all the small vendors that make you think of the old times.
